Some people swear by adding drops of bleach, a penny, or the little
packets of flower food into the water of a vase. All to prolong the life
of the blooms. I've tried them all during my 40 years experience as a
florist. During that time I've found these 3 to be the best, adding many
days and sometimes weeks of life to cut flowers.
1. Sanitize
If using a vase from your cupboard, sanitize it first with bleach or run
through a dishwasher. The idea is to kill any bacteria that will plug
the flower stems, which will cause water to stop getting to the blooms.
Don't use dish soap, as it will choke the flower stems as well.
2. Trim Stems & Prune Leaves
Trim the stems at an angle before putting into your vase. Also, remove
leaves that would be submerged under water in the vase. Not only does it
make a clean presentation, it cuts down on bacteria that would grow in
the water, clogging the stems.
3.Daily Change Water & Trim Stems
Daily change the water in the vase & snip the ends of the flower stems at an angle.
